Historical Society talk on the Yacht Club
“The Oswego Yacht Club has a fascinating legacy of boating and sailing in Oswego,” said Justin White, president of the Oswego County Historical Society. “This was a popular recreational pastime in Oswego in the latter part of the 19th century.”
The Oswego Yacht Club was organized in 1881 and incorporated in 1883, making it the oldest club on the American side of Lake Ontario. The club took a downturn around the Great Depression, and was dormant for many years. Presently the club has a very active presence in the community, hosting weekly fleet races in Oswego on Wednesday evenings in the summer and sponsoring partnerships such as the Oswego County Hospice Regatta every June.
The event is free and open to the public with donations accepted. For more information, call the society’s Richardson-Bates House Museum at 343-1342
